Fire agency mergers nothing new

In response to "Agencies turn up heat on fire talks" (Aug. 7, Page A-1), the so-called Regional Fire Service Ad-hoc Committee makes it sound like combining fire districts is a new idea. It's not! In 1995 the Riverbank, Empire, Stanislaus County and WaterfordHickman fire districts merged to form what is now the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District. Other fire districts in the county were invited to explore consolidation in what was then called "Project 94," but most chose not to. "Regional fire service" is just a new name for another Stanislaus Consolidated-type merger.
