Re “Obama gets away with lying” (Letters, Feb. 16): The author’s letter is, in general, only as sad and disturbing as is usual for its genre. But there is one element of this rant that is beyond what is usual for its type.
The writer says, “Only because of his skin color has he not been asked to resign or step down.” Can the author believe he has made a rational statement? I think quite the opposite is true. It is because of his skin color that President Obama is the subject of so much hatred and constant garbage-chucking.
We seem to have come far enough as a nation that most of the public garbage is not overtly racist, but we don’t seem to be anywhere near the point where covert or unconscious racism does not divert every discussion of this president toward a quick trip to crazytown.
President Obama will probably be judged kindly by future historians, in part because he has accomplished some positive things in spite of the storm of bull-droppings surrounding his every action and statement.
I don’t think history will be as kind to his detractors. Such constant and extreme disrespect for the man, the office and the majority of the electorate who have twice elected him do not serve this country in the short or long term. I sincerely believe the president’s skin color is the underlying fact that is energizing the crazy train.
