Over the years, The Modesto Bee has printed many articles on Fr. Joseph Illo including refusing communion if you voted on a certain proposition, his studies in Rome, then leaving to teach in southern California, then taking a new parish in San Francisco and now excluding female altar servers in his new parish.
I am sure he did a lot of good things here in Modesto to include more women in filling roles at St. Joseph’s. But how about some stories of other religious leaders here in Modesto and what they are doing in their churches, with their congregations and in personal lives?
With all of the negative press lately about the Catholic Church, I hope The Bee’s printing of the story of Fr. Illo (“Girls barred as altar servers” Page B3, Jan. 29) does not discourage all the devoted Catholic female altar singers, lecturers, altar-service instructors and even young altar servers from wanting to serve God.
