To those who bemoan the climate-change deniers and vaccination opponents among us, take heart! Education does work.
In the 1944 film “Laura,” which TCM featured last week, nearly every scene has Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews either lighting a cigarette or snuffing one out in one of the ash trays that abound on every level surface. And, of coarse, a cigarette case figures prominently in unraveling a clue.
Especially incredible to our 2015 sensitivities is that smoking takes place in the movie before, during and after every meal.
That was the norm then; we have learned to snuff out that harmful mind set.
