Election officials in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties have completed their final vote counts for the June 7 election, confirming that Ken Vogel and Heath Flora, both Republicans, will face off in November to determine who will take the 12th Assembly District seat.
After the election, it took several weeks to determine the two top candidates who would face each other, regardless of party, in the 12th Assembly District race, as there were still uncounted provisional and vote-by-mail ballots in both counties.
According to the final election results, Vogel topped the race with 23,678 votes (25.6 percent), followed by Flora’s 21,484 votes (23.2 percent). Democrat Virginia Madueño wasn’t able to break away from the third place position, as the final count showed she received 19,764 votes (22.4 percent). Democrat Harinder Grewal and Republican Cindy Marks rounded out the pack.
Madueño could not be reached for comment by press time Friday. On her Facebook page late Thursday, the former Riverbank mayor thanked her supporters. “Although I am disappointed in the final outcome I am extremely happy with what I consider to be a great campaign. We kicked off the campaign in February 2015, it was a year and a half of hard work and dedication not just by me but by so many people who came out to be a part of this journey,” the post said.
“I am ecstatic that we had so many diverse supporters including many Republicans who had no problem being open with their endorsement or support because they took the time to learn more about the candidate and not focus solely on that ‘D’ behind the last name.”
The 12th Assembly District, which covers eastern Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties, including Turlock, Salida, Ripon, Manteca, Lathrop and part of Modesto, is composed of about 42 percent registered Republican voters and 34 percent Democrats.
On a related note, the final results in the District 5 supervisor race show that Stanislaus County Supervisor Jim DeMartini finished with 50.69 percent, clinching the race. Patterson Mayor Luis Molina finished with 31.61 percent, while Eileen Wyatt Stokman received 17.50 percent of the vote.
