Law enforcement and government officials joined Proposition 6 co-sponsor state Sen. George Runner for a news conference outside the Modesto Police Department on Wednesday. Proposition 6 would require new state spending to combat crime and gangs and would increase penalties for several crimes. Proponents say the proposition, known as "The Safe Neighborhoods Act: Stop Gang, Gun and Street Crime," will create intervention and rehabilitation programs; enhance penalties for gang members, felons with guns, methamphetamine dealers and other street thugs; guarantee tools and resources for law enforcement; and protect victims and their families.
