A 2013 Riverbank High School graduate with brothers in Riverbank schools will represent voters in eastern and southern areas of the district for the next four years.
The Riverbank Unified School District board appointed Ernest Velasco, 20, on Wednesday to fill the Area 1 seat up for election this year. No candidates filed to run from the district’s largest area, covering its eastern and southern sections.
Reached by phone Friday, Velasco said he hopes to represent a different viewpoint as the youngest member and also the only man on the board. The new appointee is bilingual and is taking online classes to get certifications in computing.
Velasco will be seated at the board’s organizational meeting Dec. 8, along with Ana Vigil, the only candidate to file for the Area 5 seat representing the center of the district.
No Riverbank seats will be voted on this November, the district’s first by-area election cycle. In 2017, trustee areas 2, 3, and 4 will be up for election.
The board interviewed two applicants Wednesday, Velasco and Mary Bento.
“After the interview and a rich discussion, the board selected Ernest Velasco,” said RUSD Superintendent Daryl Camp.
Velasco attended Riverbank elementary, middle and high schools. He volunteers in the after-school tennis programs and has helped out in the family resource center’s summer school program. He has brothers who attend Riverbank High and the district’s dual immersion charter school, the Riverbank Language Academy.
