A plane crash will rock the Modesto Junior College East Campus on Friday, with emergency vehicles racing to the scene along Coldwell Avenue and disaster crews in full gear at work. Fortunately, the only casualty should be parking.
The College Avenue campus will hold an emergency response exercise from 1 to 5 p.m. Organizers say the event will not disrupt classes or campus operations; however, several parking areas will be closed at noon: Lot 101 (by the baseball diamond), Lot 102 (next to the Agriculture Complex), street parking on Coldwell Avenue between Tully Road and College Avenue, and North Campus Way.
The simulated plane crash will provide training for MJC’s Crisis Response Team and test the college’s Comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan. MJC management will practice activating and operating an Emergency Operations Center.
Local agencies joining MJC in the field are the Modesto Police Department, Modesto Fire Department and American Medical Response ambulance service. Evaluators from other agencies will assist the college by observing the exercise in the field and in the Emergency Operations Center, and providing feedback at the end of the drill.
Outside agencies participating as evaluators are representatives from the Los Rios Community College District Police Department, Stanislaus County deputy fire warden and Stanislaus County’s director of legislative affairs and communications.
