Fight with Modesto police officer ends in arrest

A man with a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon fought with the Modesto police officer who was arresting him Thursday in west Modesto, according to police.

The officer saw Scott Branch, 36, at Cesar Chavez Park on Sierra Drive around noon, said Lt. Brandon Gillespie. When the officer attempted to apprehend Branch, he allegedly fought with the officer, grabbing his radio and temporarily preventing him from calling for backup.

When the officer regained control of his radio and called for help, Branch allegedly reached for the officer’s firearm. Gillespie said the officer was able to overpower Branch and hold him down until help arrived.

Branch was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest while attempting to take a peace officer’s firearm and for warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.
