A young couple walking with their baby in south Modesto were arrested after authorities say the man beat a woman with her own cane.
Angelica Arias and Joshua Towles, both 19, got into an argument while walking with their 11-month-old son on Boise Avenue about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves.
As they continued walking and arguing, a woman with an “antique cane” walked toward them from the opposite direction near Hatch Road.
Graves said the 67-year-old woman has walked the same route every morning for years.
When she crossed paths with the couple, Graves said, Towles asked the woman, “What the f--- are you looking at?”
Authorities believe he then took the cane from the woman and hit her with it several times, knocking her to the ground. She suffered several large lacerations to her head and face.
Towles and Arias fled the area, Graves said, but were stopped by officers responding to the scene.
Graves said Towles denied taking the cane, while still holding it in his hand.
Towles fought with officers as they detained him, Graves said, spitting on them and kicking one.
He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, battery, elder abuse and assaulting an officer.
Arias was arrested on suspicion of obstructing or delaying an officer and conspiracy.
The couple’s baby was released to the custody of a family member after their arrests.
