Modesto man surrenders after standoff with police

After roughly a two-hour standoff, a man in a west Modesto home surrendered to police officers who’d responded to a report of domestic violence.

Charly Spyksma, 41, was taken into custody about 8 p.m. today outside the residence in the 1000 block of Arroyo Hondo Place. During the standoff, he had broken windows of the home and was seen brandishing a handgun, police say.

Residents of neighboring houses within the line of sight of the home were evacuated by officers carrying shields and rifles. The Modesto police SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were on scene, talking with Spyksma by telephone and loudspeaker. He could be heard yelling back at officers from inside.

The incident began when a woman went to the police station about 6 p.m. to make a report of domestic violence. Officers immediately responded to Arroyo Hondo. Spyksma initially came out of the house but quickly ran back inside and remained uncooperative during the standoff, police said.

Neighbors said the couple who live in the house have three children, but police believe Spyksma was in there alone.
