A father remained in jail Friday charged with murder in his 2-month-old son's death as detectives continued to investigate the incident that began early Thursday at a north Modesto home.
Abinesh Kumar, 30, was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked at the Stanislaus County Jail about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, said Lt. Rick Armendariz, a Modesto police spokesman. Kumar was being held without bail Friday night, and he was scheduled to appear Monday in Stanislaus County Superior Court.
About 1 a.m. Thursday, emergency personnel responded to a home in the 1400 block of Kingsbury Avenue on a report of an unresponsive child, Armendariz said.
Paramedics' efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Armendariz said an autopsy performed on the infant found he had died from "nonaccidental injuries," but an exact cause of death had not been determined.
Detectives interviewed the child's father Thursday afternoon before they arrested him.
A second child, Kumar's 1-year-old son, was placed with Child Protective Services after his arrest.
Armendariz said Kumar and the children's mother are separated and involved in legal proceedings over child custody.
Attempts to reach relatives of Kumar or his son were not successful Friday.
Nobody answered the front door of the house on Kingsbury Avenue, just north of Mount Vernon Drive and west of Tully Road.
Neighbors said they did not know the residents, who kept to themselves.
