Merced County firefighter Andrew Maloney, 29, of Los Banos died Sunday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto from injuries he sustained in an auto accident June 9.
Maloney, who was off duty at the time, was southbound on Highway 165 approaching Pioneer Road on his motorcycle.
Amie Chick, 24, of Santa Nella was northbound on Highway 165 approaching the same intersection, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
Chick reportedly attempted to make a left turn in front of Maloney, who was unable to slow down and struck the right side of Chick's 2012 Jeep.
Chick was talking on her cell phone, CHP officials said.
She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and later found to be under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, authorities said.
Maloney began his career in 2000 as a paid call firefighter for the Merced County Fire Department in Los Banos. In the summer of 2001, he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a firefighter. Since 2003, Maloney worked for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the O'Banion Auditorium at the Los Banos Fairgrounds, 403 F St.The CDF Firefighters/MMU chapter has set up an account to assist Maloney's family with expenses.
