Pregnant woman shot in Modesto intersection dies

The 18-year-old pregnant woman shot last week at a west Modesto intersection died Thursday from her injuries, authorities said.

Soheila Delatorre was pronounced dead at a Modesto hospital six days after she was shot while riding in a car at Vernon Avenue and Robertson Road Friday night, according to Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

Singh said an occupant of the vehicle Delatorre was in exchanged gunfire with occupants of another vehicle, described as a dark, newer model car with chrome rims.

No suspects have been found. Delattore’s sister-in-law, Sandra Reyes, said that her brother, Jorge Delatorre, was in the car with his wife, but insists he never returned fire.

“We are just really trying to be a family right now and help Jorge get through this," Reyes said this morning.

She declined further comment.

Earlier this week, Reyes told The Bee that Jorge and Soheila Delatorre were very much in love and looking forward to having a child.

Soheila Delatorre is four months pregnant, Reyes said.

“It’s unconditional love that he had for her and his baby that he was waiting for,” Reyes said about her brother, who married Soheila Delatorre three months ago. “I can’t even describe how happy they have been together.”

The family was spending today trying to make funeral arrangements.

Sheriff's officials ask anyone with information about the shooting call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636.
