A man raking leaves in his Twain Harte back yard discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb on Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of a nearby playground.
The Calaveras County bomb squad, assisting Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department officers, was able to remove the bomb, according to Sgt. Jeff Wilson.
The bomb squad planned to take the explosive to the Carson Hill Quarry to detonate it.
Wilson said the man, whose home is in the 22000 block of Golf Club Drive, was raking leaves and tossing them into a burning pile.
The man reached down and grabbed a pile of leaves, and quickly noticed he was holding the pipe bomb. Wilson said it was about eight inches long with a cap on both ends and a fuse coming out one of them.
He said the man placed the pipe bomb on the ground, and called authorities.
Wilson said the man’s back fence abuts a nearby playground on Meadow Drive. There were a few small children playing there, and parents nearby.
Nobody could be reached Wednesday at the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department with information about the detonation.
