EVENING UPDATE - The 3-year-old boy who survived a fatal wreck in Oakland that killed his twin brother, his mother and his uncle remains hospitalized on life support this evening. His grandparents, Bill and Louise Terra of Modesto, say Jessie Woodson has no signs of brain activity. The family is waiting for more medical tests to determine if the child should be taken off life support.
Jessie and brother Jason were identical twins.
"They were characters," said Louise Terra. She said Jessie was outgoing from a very young age, while Jason was a reserved "mama’s boy."
Three members of a Modesto family died early Monday in an Oakland car crash and a child was critically injured, the California Highway Patrol said.
Sara Marie Terra, 23, and her brother, David James Terra, 20, died at the scene. One of Sara’s twin 3-year-old boys also died. The other twin was fighting for his life Monday night in Children’s Hospital Oakland.
The car’s driver was arrested on charges of manslaughter, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.
CHP officer Sam Morgan said Tiffany Reynolds, 26, of Richmond, smelled of alcohol.
"Witnesses said Tiffany was maneuvering in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed," Morgan said.
About 1:20 a.m., the driver lost control of the car, which crossed multiple lanes on Interstate 880 before smashing into a concrete wall.
"There were no child safety seats in the car or at the scene," Morgan said.
The twins, Jason and Jessie Woodson, were critically injured in the crash. One was pinned under the steering column. The other was ejected. One of them died in the hospital about 9:30 a.m. The Alameda County coroner’s office is trying to identify which twin died.
"The adults in that car were being irresponsible to not have those children restrained," Morgan said. "This was a senseless tragedy."
Sara and David Terra were raised in Modesto. Their parents are Bill and Louise Terra of Modesto.
Most recently, Sara Terra had been living in Richmond her twins and Reynolds.
The boys’ father died a couple years ago, according to the CHP. David Terra listed the Maui Terrace mobile home park in Modesto as his most recent address, the CHP said.
