Fourteen people were convicted of welfare fraud or related crimes during September in Stanislaus County, District Attorney Birgit Fladager reported. Ten people entered pleas to felony charges and four pleaded to misdemeanor charges, Fladager said.
The defendants applied for and received cash aid, food stamps or child care benefits for which they were not eligible. One defendant was sentenced to state prison, a few were sent to jail and several were sentenced to community service.
Most were put on probation. The defendants defrauded the Community Services Agency of $111,000, Fladager said. Authorities said those involved were Irene Arellano, Rebecca Craig, Sarah Davila, Melinda Drymon, Debbie Gutierrez, Beth Ann Johnson, Edmond Keene, Arthur Macias, Renee McCullough, Saroeun Moun, Sylvia Spearman, Alishia Tolbert, Dorothy Wright and Tracy Videll.
