Toddler expected to recover from hit-and-run; Suspect at large

A 3-year-old Turlock girl injured in a crash Wednesday night was expected to fully recover, Modesto police said Friday evening as they continued to search for the driver who they say fled the scene of the accident. Sgt. Brian Findlen said the girl was listed in critical condition at the University of California Medical Center in Sacramento but was expected to survive her head injuries.

The girl was injured in a hit-and-run accident at Mitchell and Finch roads. Police believe Gabriel Garcia Martinez, 23, left, was driving the pickup that was found abandoned about a quarter-mile from the intersection. Police described him as 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 7 inches tall, 170 pounds with dark hair and a light complexion.

Martinez is a carnival worker in the area temporarily for a carnival in Ceres, police said. Police ask anyone with information about Martinez's whereabouts to call traffic officer Dan Starr at 572-9571 or Crime Stoppers at 521-4636.
