An inmate at U.S. Penitentiary-Atwater was sent to the hospital Sunday night with stab wounds, the third violent outburst at the penitentiary within five days, officials said.
The latest inmate-on-inmate assault comes a week after the penitentiary ended its three-month lockdown in response to the June stabbing death of 22-year-old correctional officer Jose Rivera. Prison spokesman Jesse Gonzalez said Monday that correctional officers found an inmate with puncture wounds at about 1:30 p.m. The victim was taken to the hospital and returned to the penitentiary that evening.
The penitentiary didn't go on lockdown after the assault, which is under investigation, Gonzalez said, declining to discuss incident.
