Sonora Police investigating shooting death of teen near school
A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in Sonora Wednesday night.
Just before midnight Sonora Police Department officers were dispatched to School Street. Several people called in reports of shots fired, according to a press release. Officers arrived within minutes but didn’t find anyone at the scene, which is near Sonora High School.
A short time later someone called police and reported the 17-year-old had been shot and was at the hospital. Officers responded to the hospital and learned the victim had died.
Sonora Police did not release any additional details about the victim, the person who called police on his behalf or any possible suspects or motive.
On Thursday, Sonora Union High School District Superintendent Ed Pelfrey sent a note to district families regarding rumors surrounding the incident.
“To dispel any rumors, the Sonora Police Department has assured me there is no threat to public safety at this time,” he said in the notice, which was shared on several social media pages. Police said they had received calls asking if there was an active shooting situation at the high school, and that was not the case, Pelfrey said.
Authorities ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call the Sonora Police Department at 209-532-8141
