A six-month investigation by the Santa Clara Police Department into an illegal gambling ring culminated in the arrests of 27 people, including five in Modesto.
Investigators from the Santa Clara and San Jose police departments and the Santa Clara County Special Enforcement Team served search warrants at four homes, two in Modesto and two in San Jose, early Tuesday.
The searches came at the end of a six-month investigation during which detectives identified 10 suspects, police said.
Of those arrested Tuesday, 10 face illegal gambling charges. The remaining 17 were jailed on other charges. According to CBS San Francisco, those charges included outstanding warrants, illegal drug possession and child endangerment.
All suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County jail.
Authorities also seized four guns, $70,000 in cash, five illegal gambling machines and one-half ounce of methamphetamine, police said.
“It’s obvious to us it’s a gambling ring,” Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke told CBS San Francisco. “It’s a significant bust for us.”
