A 40-year-old Modesto man has been sentenced to seven years and four months in prison for speeding away from police and possessing two daggers while out on bail.
Jorge Ortega on Feb. 2 pleaded no contest to evading police and possessing a dagger. Deputy District Attorney Tracy Roland prosecuted the case.
On Dec. 23, 2011, Modesto police officers responded to a report of shoplifting at the Toys R Us store on Sisk Road. The officers searched Ortega and found he the two daggers, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.
Ortega was out on a bail on Aug. 8, 2012, when Modesto police tried to stop a possible stolen vehicle driven by Ortega. Prosecutors said Ortega failed to stop and led police on a 4-mile chase, running multiple stop signs and red lights along the way.
Eventually, Ortega abandoned the vehicle and ran from police, the prosecutors said. But the defendant was later found hiding inside a nearby trash can.
