A two-alarm fire damaged a garage at a Modesto used car dealership Monday, but flames were stopped from spreading further into the McHenry Avenue business.
The fire occurred about 2 p.m. at the Auto 1 Pay dealership in the 400 block of McHenry Avenue, just north of Stoddard Avenue.
Investigators had not determined the cause of the fire but it’s possible the blaze started in one of the cars inside the garage, said Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Hugo Patino.
The first firefighters to arrive at the business found the garage engulfed in flames. A second alarm was issued to provide enough firefighting personnel and equipment to stop the flames from spreading.
Patino said a cynder block wall prevented the fire from reaching the nearby dealership office at the front of the building. He said there was only some smoke damage to the office. A few vehicles in the garage were burned.
There were no reported injuries. It was unclear whether the dealership was open when the fire started.
Modesto police closed a portion of the southbound lanes on McHenry while firefighters put out the blaze.
