It might have taken a miracle to keep a little candle lighted as members of Congregation Beth Shalom kicked off Hanukkah in the wind Tuesday evening in downtown Modesto. Instead, the synagogue had a couple of battery-operated candles on hand for the ceremonial lighting of the Chanukiah, or menorah. CBS held the community menorah lighting at Tenth Street Plaza, followed by a party at the Sherwood Avenue synagogue. The kickoff of the eight-day Festival of Lights included songs and treats.
