The Modesto City Council will meet in closed session Monday to interview candidates for city manager.
Officials have said two candidates are scheduled to be interviewed. There is a third candidate, but officials have said he cannot make the interview but could be available at another time.
The council meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and before going into closed session, the council will take comments from the public regarding the city manager position.
Nineteen people applied for the job, and the council and its executive search firm narrowed the field to five candidates, but two of them have dropped out. The remaining candidates include interim City Manager Jim Holgersson, who came to Modesto in mid-May from a San Jose consulting firm. Holgersson has more than 35 years of experience in the public sector.
City Manager Greg Nyhoff left Modesto in May after nearly six years with the city to become city manager of Oxnard in Southern California.
Mayor Garrad Marsh has said the council could pick finalists Monday and bring them back Oct. 20 for interviews with two panels – one made up of city officials and a second composed of community members – before being interviewed a second time by the council. He also has said the council could pick a city manager Oct. 20.
