Emanuel Cancer Center held its Women’s Cancer Awareness Night Out on Tuesday, with the theme “Champions for Life: Strength of Body, Mind & Spirit.” The free event, held at Monte Vista Chapel, featured gold-medal-winning Olympic gymnast and ovarian cancer survivor Shannon Miller, who shared her story of perseverance and encouraged women to make health their priority. As cancer survivors made their grand entrance to the event, Turlock firefighters presented each with a medal that read, “Champion for Life.” The Turlock Firefighters Local 2434 also surprised cancer survivor, marathoner and teacher Jill Norman of Turlock with its Pink Helmet Award. The award is presented to someone whose life has been touched by cancer and who represents the characteristics of a firefighter: compassion, bravery, honesty, commitment and courage.
