Firefighters rescue unconscious man from Modesto apartment

One men was hospitalized after a fire early Tuesday at a Modesto apartment.

According to the Modesto Fire Department, firefighters were called to a home in the 700 block of Sixth Street at 1:55 a.m. The location is just off Highway 99 in downtown Modesto.

Arriving crews found smoke throughout the apartment. Food was burning on the stove in the kitchen; a mattress and box spring in the bedroom were smoldering.

Firefighters also found a man, just inside the living room, unconscious and on the floor. They carried the man outside, where paramedics tended to him.

According to a news release from the fire department, the man regained consciousness before being taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the kitchen fire and removed the smoldering mattress and box spring..

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
