ASTRONOMER SET

TO SPEAK AT MJC

Modesto Junior College will hold a talk Friday by UC Berkeley astronomer Alex Filippenko – a world-renowned expert on exploding stars, black holes, active galaxies and cosmology – from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Mary Stuart Rogers Student Center on the west campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave. Filippenko’s talk is titled “Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe.” The program, recommended for ages 11 and older, is part of Modesto Area Partners in Science series. HEAR PROS, CONS

OF PROPOSITIONS

The Stanislaus County League of Women Voters will present “Ballot Proposition Pros and Cons” on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the California State University, Stanislaus, Event Center, 1 University Circle, Turlock. The league will provide unbiased information about the ballot measures on the Nov. 4 ballot. Information shared will include the situation underlying the ballot measures, explanations of what the measures would do if passed and what fiscal effects they may have, and who the supporters and opponents are for each proposition. On Oct. 8, the Modesto Junior College Civic Engagement Project Voter Service and the county League of Women Voters will present the same forum at 6:30 p.m. in Sierra Hall 137 on the MJC West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave. Campus parking is available for $2 in student parking lots for those without a campus parking permit.

LEARN TO RECOGNIZE DROPOUT INDICATORS

The Stanislaus County Office of Education launched an initiative last year called Destination Graduation. Its goal is to increase the percentage of students who graduate from local high schools.
