Retired ballroom instructor Luke Wonderly walked into Modesto by way of Crows Landing Road on Monday afternoon, visiting one of hundreds of cities he will see during a 31/2-year peace walk, which began in April in Bakersfield. The 58-year-old plans to walk to the capitals of the 48 contiguous states, meeting with the governor in each to spread his message of peace. Wonderly hopes to end his journey by meeting with President Barack Obama. He said no formal meetings have been arranged, but he is confident the governors will be willing to hear his message. Wonderly intends to arrive in Sacramento in three weeks. He will remain in the warmer Southern states for the winter, going next to Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Along the way, he sleeps in fields outside the towns he visits. People sometimes offer Wonderly food, including a man who brought him a soda and a sandwich as he rested at a business north of the Seventh Street Bridge.
