Turlock Police Chief Robert Jackson and Fire Chief Tim Lohman got drenched Friday by accepting the ALS ice bucket challenge. Jackson was nominated by Officer Mayra Lewis, the Police Department spokeswoman, and Jackson in turn nominated Lohman. Putting a twist on the challenge, Jackson said, members of the public safety departments collected donations, with the top collectors getting to dump the ice water on him and Lohman. The honor went to the Police Explorers. Donors also were given a choice: Their money could go to the ALS Association or to help the Flores family of Turlock. Brian Flores, 4, his mother, Julia Flores, 20, and her mother-in-law, Elena Flores, 47, were killed in a hit-and-run accident earlier this month. The ALS Association raises money for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. For video, see this story on modbee.com.
