For a dozen years, the Stanislaus Economic Development and Workforce Alliance has been burdened with a formal name that was too long and hard to remember.
That ended Monday when the agency’s governing board adopted a new name: Stanislaus Business Alliance.
“We want local businesses to know that we support them,” explained David White, who took over as the Alliance’s chief executive officer in January.
White said the shorter and more direct name will make it easier for the public to understand his organization’s mission.

This is not the first time the agency has changed names. During the 1980s and ’90s, it was the Stanislaus County Economic Development Corp. But most folks referred to it as SCEDCO.
Then in 2002, it merged with the county’s Workforce Investment Board and adopted the name Stanislaus Economic Development and Workforce Alliance. But most folks referred to it as the Alliance.
It will keep that nickname, just not all those other words in its old title.
White said the Alliance serves both county residents and businesses by helping attract jobs to Stanislaus and assisting local companies that want to expand. It also addresses employers’ workforce needs and helps entrepreneurs turn their ideas into viable businesses.
Its website remains www.stanalliance.com.
