HOLIDAY DUI EFFORT BRINGS 32 ARRESTS
Officers arrested 32 people through Saturday in an Independence Day weekend crackdown on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, according to an initial count. Half of the arrests were on suspicion of impaired driving and half were on outstanding DUI warrants, said the update from the Avoid the 12 campaign. The name refers to the number of law-enforcement agencies taking part in the effort, which started Thursday and was to end Sunday. No deaths were reported. A year ago, 26 people were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving during a two-day campaign. The agencies urge people to call 911 to report suspicious drivers. The campaign is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
