They were heading north in a 1994 Jeep Wrangler.

CHP Officer Ken Bruce said Estevam veered to the right side of the road and struck a rock, causing the Jeep to overturn. As the vehicle rolled, the driver and the passenger were ejected. Neither of them was wearing a seat belt.
The Jeep continued to roll and landed on top of the driver, Estevam, before coming to rest on its side. Casqueira was able to walk to the nearest cabin to ask for help.
