Update: Timothy Lyman will be arraigned today at 1:30 p.m. at the Stanislaus County courthouse.
We will have an updated story after the arraignment.
A 44-year-old Oakdale soccer coach was arrested Monday night on charges of raping one of his players — a 16-year-old girl — while she was sleeping at his home, authorities said.
Timothy Lyman is suspected of having sex with the girl after she apparently fell asleep after a party at his home in the 1100 block of H Street, said Sgt. Brian Shimmel of the Oakdale Police Department.
The girl told police Monday that she attended a party in late December during which Lyman provided alcohol to her. She told police she woke up to Lyman having sex with her. Further information about the attack was not available.
Shimmel said other teenagers had been at the party drinking. Investigators are trying to determine how many people were there but had talked Monday with at least three other teenagers who attended the party. Shimmel did not think any other adults had attended the party.
Oakdale police said Tuesday afternoon that Lyman was a soccer coach and the girl was one of his players. Shimmel would not say which soccer association Lyman coached with.
"It could be an independent traveling team," he said.
But it wasn't the Oakdale Youth Soccer League, said its president, Jo Harris. Harris said that while the victim was a member of one of the league's teams, Lyman was not a coach and had no affiliation with the squad. His daughter played on the same team as the alleged victim, Harris said.
The girl told her mother about the alleged rape on Monday and they reported it to police. Oakdale detectives interviewed Lyman Monday.
"We have sufficient enough evidence to move forward," Shimmel said. "When presented with some of the facts, (Lyman) didn't deny anything."
Lyman is being held at the Stanislaus County Jail on a charge of rape. His bail was set at $100,000.
