Modesto City Schools board member Gary Lopez handed in his resignation late Monday following the regularly scheduled school board meeting, district officials confirmed.
Board President Sue Zwahlen and Vice President Rubén Villalobos said Lopez handed them his letter of resignation after the board had completed its business for the night. It was not part of the agenda and, therefore, not part of any public discussion.
Zwahlen and Villalobos said his resignation won't become official until it is submitted to the county schools Superintendent Tom Changnon, which will likely happen today. They said Lopez asked that his resignation take effective immediately.
Lopez was up for re-election in November, but had said he wasn't running again.
Zwahlen and Villalobos said the district would have to study the legal requirements for filling the vacancy: appointment, special election or waiting for the November vote. Neither wanted to speculate about his reasons for retiring at this time.
"He'll be missed," said Zwahlen of the three-term trustee.
