A man riding his bicycle on a rural west Modesto road died after he was hit by a pickup this morning, the CHP reported.
The 48-year-old Newman man was on California Avenue just east of S. Hart Road at about 8:15 a.m. when he attempted to cross the road from the south to the north side, according to Officer Chuck Leon of the California Highway Patrol.
At the same time, a man in his early to mid-30s was driving west on California in a pickup and looking into the orchards and did not see the bicyclist until right before the collision, Leon said.
The driver of the truck checked on the victim and then called 911.
The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, died from his injuries.
He was in the area collecting cans or other recyclables, Leon said.
Speed, alcohol or drugs did not appear to play a role in the accident.
No citations have been issued at this point, although the case remains under investigation, Leon said.
