Two Modesto residents are displaced today after a fire destroyed their small mother-in-law unit on Fourth Street.
Smoke and flames were visible in the 400 square-foot home when the Modesto Fire Department arrived around 11:25 a.m. Monday, according to Battalion Chief Hugo Patino.
The couple renting the home had no electricity or gas powering the unit at 924 Fourth St., and the initial investigation indicates a candle caused the fire.
Neither of the residents were home at the time of the fire, but Patino said a friend of the couple was sleeping in the home when the fire broke out.
The friend got out safely. No firefighters were injured.
Damage to the home is estimated at $25,000, with an additional $10,000 loss in personal belongings.
Four engines and one truck company for a total of 17 personnel responded to the fire.
The couple who lived in the home is being aided by the American Red Cross.
