For the first time, Ash Wedensday services were held in the new St. Stanislaus Catholic Church on Maze Boulevard in Modesto. The day, which includes having ashes placed on the forehead in the sign of the cross, marks the beginning lent, a 40-day period — excluding Sundays — of prayer, fasting and repentance that ends Easter Sunday.
