A two-alarm fire broke out in a duplex in northeast Modesto this morning, but firefighters quickly put out the fire. It damaged the vacant unit in the structure and the family in the other side was able to get out safely, Battalion Chief Hugo Patino said.
The fire was in the 1400 block of East Rumble Road, just east of Coffee Road and near Sylvan Elementary School. The blaze started about 7 a.m. and sent a big cloud of dark gray smoke into the sky.
Patino said the heaviest damage to the side-by-side duplex was on the west side of the vacant unit. Investigators went inside the building, trying to determine the cause of the fire.
No damage estimate was available.
