A 30-year-old man was struck and killed by a train in Turlock today, authorities said.
The man, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was taken to a hospital this morning, and later died, according to Sgt. Nino Amirfar of the Turlock Police Department.
Officers responded to the call at 9:04 a.m.
A witness told police the man was running toward the train tracks on Front Street south of Fulkerth Road near the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.
The witness said the man ran onto the tracks and continued running south, the same direction of the train, which was traveling at approximately 50 mph, Amirfar said. The train conductor blew the horn and hit the emergency brakes.
The man was struck and thrown clear of the tracks.
As of this afternoon, Amirfar said police were still investigating the incident and did not know why the man was on the tracks.
