Fire threatens homes in west Modesto

Five fire companies responded to a grass fire near Kansas Avenue and Carpenter Road in west Modesto on Sunday, said Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Mark Johansen.

The blaze was about 5 acres when firefighters arrived about 5 p.m. They battled the wind-fanned flames for about two hours.

Some nearby houses were threatened, but none were damaged and no one was injured, said Johansen. Some homeowners pulled out garden hoses and shovels to help keep the fire at bay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
