A Modesto mother and son were injured Thursday after the van they were riding in rolled over on northbound Highway 99 near the Central Modesto exit, officials said.
The two were passengers in the van. After the crash, the driver fled. Officials are looking for him, said California Highway Patrol officer Brandan Everett.
The van was heading north about 2:35 p.m. when it veered onto the shoulder before losing control and moving left into the fast lane. The driver steered back to the right and rolled after hitting the shoulder embankment, Everett said.
Diane Chappell, 39, was thrown from the back seat. Everett said she was not wearing a seat belt. She received major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center.
