About 5,000 people gathered Sunday at Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Much like the Fourth of July, Sept. 16 marks the beginning of a war Mexicans fought against the Spanish. The war began in 1810 and lasted until 1821, when Mexico became its own country. Festivities included Latino music Mexican food, pony rides for the kids and lots of vendors.
