WOMAN CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT: A Modesto woman has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling $40,000 to $70,000 from Gowans Printing, police said Tuesday. Jessica Hoover, 25, was arrested and charged with four felonies July 14, after the company audited its books and found discrepancies, according to Modesto police Sgt. Craig Gundlach. Police suspect that Hoover stole from the company during a two-year period by writing checks to herself on a company account and using a company ATM card to pay personal bills. Hoover was arrested and charged with embezzlement, forgery, theft using an ATM card and identity theft. Detectives from the department's economic crimes unit forwarded their preliminary findings to the district attorney's office and are continuing their investigation, Gundlach said. Officials from the company, which is on H Street in downtown Modesto, declined to comment.
