NATIONAL NIGHT OUT MEETING: Sonora police will hold a town hall meeting Aug. 5 as part of National Night Out, an annual event geared toward stopping criminal activity and strengthening community programs to keep neighborhoods safe. The town hall meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Opera Hall, 250 S. Washington St. in Sonora. Police officials will speak about traffic safety, identity theft and elder abuse. Handouts will be available, and attendees can ask questions after the presentations. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate participation in crime prevention efforts and strengthen partnerships between police and the public. "This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity," said Sonora police Chief Mace McIntosh.
PROMOTIONS AND AWARDS: The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department will give out awards and announce new hires and promotions within the department during a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the county Board of Supervisors chamber, 2 S. Green St., Sonora. Sheriff Jim Mele will announce the 12 new hires and introduce four employees who have received promotions. The sheriff also will be presenting 22 service awards and one citizen commendation. The ceremony is open to the public. The sheriff wants to commend the work of department officials over the past year.
