SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN: A search is under way for a La Grange man whose wife said he was overdue from a woodcutting trip to the Soapstone Ridge area, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Department said Monday. The sheriff's office said the missing man, Roy Ward Watson, 43, had not contacted his wife since he left home Wednesday. She was expecting him home within a day or two, a sheriff's news release said. A missing person report was filed Saturday, and a formal search began that afternoon. Crews are searching the Soapstone Ridge and Greeley Hill areas. Airplanes and a helicopter were dispatched. Watson has multiple sclerosis, and if his medication runs out he may have difficulty walking and may become disoriented, authorities said. Watson is a white man, 6 feet 1 inches tall, 240 pounds, with hazel eyes and short, dirty blond hair. He was driving a white 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup with an extended cab.
BODY RECOVERED: Divers searching Cherry Lake on Sunday recovered the body of a 24-year-old man who is believed to have drowned Saturday, the Tuolumne County sheriff's office said. Officials did not release the name of the drowning victim, who is from Indiana. Family and friends told deputies Saturday that he had been swimming with the group and disappeared. Divers found the body at a depth of 35 feet, approximately 75 feet from the shore. An autopsy is pending.
FIRE GUTS HOUSE: A house fire in east Modesto on Sunday afternoon left a family displaced and did $300,000 in damage, fire officials said Monday. The fire at 3517 Joanna Drive started about 4:14 p.m. Investigators are looking at how the fire started. The fire was contained in 25 minutes. Eighteen firefighters were at the scene for three hours.
