There were plenty of people jumping for joy at the 67th annual California Invitational Relays on Saturday.
Namely, it was Jenn Stuczyn-ski and Giovanni Lanaro, two high-flying pole vaulters.
Stuczynski cleared a meet record 15 feet, 5 inches on her first vault of the day. After smashing Stacy Dragila's meet record of 15-1, the New York native missed three times at 16 feet, ¾ inch, which would have broken Stuczynski's own U.S. record of 16 feet.
Meanwhile, Mexico's Lanaro enlivened what had been a ho-hum men's competition with a vault of 19 feet, ¼ inch.
There were other high marks at the meet, which drew about 3,000 people to the Modesto Junior College track on a warm and sunny day.
Modesto's Suzy Powell finished third in the discus with a throw of 200-1.
And shot putter Christian Cantwell showed why he should be a presence at the Beijing Olympics with an impressive throw of 71-4¾.
