GRANDDAD ACCUSED: Modesto police arrested a 64-year-old man Thursday accused of inappropriate sexual acts with five of his grandchildren, Sgt. Craig Gundlach said. Detectives from the Special Victims Unit found Trery Chen and arrested him at his son's home, which is where Chen lives, police said. Gundlach said police were alerted last week after one of Chen's grandchildren was sent to her school principal's office. She told the principal that her grandfather had inappropriately touched her, Gundlach said. That sparked an investigation by Stanislaus County Child Protection Services, which interviewed 12 of Chen's grandchildren. Five of the children later disclosed inappropriate acts conducted by Chen. He was interviewed by detectives and later booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on five counts related to inappropriate acts of a sexual nature with a child. All the children will remain with their parents and Chen is not allowed to return to his son's home, according to CPS.
VICTIM CRITICAL: A 23-year-old Lathrop woman remains in critical condition at Doctors Medical Center after a crash on Highway 99 sent her car sailing across the freeway at Crows Landing Road. Tiffanie Helbling had been driving in the fast lane when officers believe she drifted into the center median and then overcorrected. After entering the dirt and gravel median, she turned back abruptly to the right, causing her 2006 Ford Focus to spin counterclockwise and slide across all lanes of traffic, said officer Tom Killian with the California Highway Patrol. He said the car hit sand barrels near the offramp and stopped on the east shoulder of the offramp. She was still in critical condition Thursday morning, said hospital spokeswoman Carin Sarkis.
