A door can make or break your house
Modesto is experiencing a rash of auto thefts and residential and vehicle burglaries, police are reporting. Officials are offering weekly tips to protect your home and vehicles:
Have a deadbolt lock for each exterior door as well as a security screen door. All deadbolt locks should have the following features:
Hardened steel tapered cylinder guard. This prevents tearing the cylinder from the door.
1½-inch to 2-inch throw bolt with hardened steel core, so it cannot be sawed off.
A reinforced striker plate to prevent kick-in entries. This can be done by using 2½-inch to 3-inch screws when mounting the striker plate.
A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb turn on the inside of the lock and a keyed cylinder on the outside. (You don't want a keyed lock on the inside; in case of fire, it hinders your exit if you don't have the key.)
