Locally grown Nut is first on roster since '83

The Modesto Nuts will have their usual assortment of new faces in uniform when they open the California League season tonight against the Ports in Stockton. They'll also have eight familiar faces, players returning to the Nuts from last season.

And they'll have one familiar face known to Modestans for more than baseball.

Center fielder Anthony Jackson is a graduate of Davis High School and Modesto Junior College, and he's the first Modestan to play for the Class-A home team in 25 years. The last was Bruce Amador in 1983.

"There might be a little added pressure in playing in front of my family every day," Jackson said. "I'll be trying to play well for them, since they'll be in the stands. Overall, though, I think it will be a fun and good experience."
